Lapua decided to develop a new cartridge for mid range shooting that would out perform the 6mmBR. The cartridge had to have a high ballistic coefficient. It had to be a load that did not burn out barrels prematurely. That was a very tall order. The result was the new 6.5 x 47 Lapua.
